Happy March!
We have officially started our project study on turtles. Thus far we have read about sea turtles, box turtles and painted turtles. We did observational drawings, created a KWL chart (know, want to know, learn) and created a map about our current knowledge on turtles. We explored real turtle shells we have on loan from the nature museum and used life cycle diagrams to explore the life cycle of the sea turtle. We also have created a sea turtle habitat in our water table. On March 24th we will be going to the Shedd Aquarium to see real sea turtles. There will be more information coming out about this trip within the next few weeks. Also, there will be a parent child activity on March 25th from 9:30-10:30. Please make arrangements to attend with your child. We will be reading Sea Turtles by Gail Gibbons, Turtle Girl by Carole Crowe (with age appropriate modifications), The Life Cycle of a Painted Turtle by Andrew Hipp, Box Turtle at Long Pond by William T George. In small groups, we will be working on numeral recognition as well as letter/letter sound recognition. Our letter of the week is J. Please send in your J pictures no later than Thursday. Have a great week! Mandi Heiser [email protected]

Hello!
Thanks to everyone who sent in materials for our valentines bags! Also thank-you to those of you who sent in your envelopes already-we will send out our letters next Tuesday by walking out to the mailbox. This week, we are finishing up our unit on the post office. Please be sure to send in your self-addressed, stamped envelope (write your child’s name and your address on the envelope) by no later than Tuesday! Please have your child check the mail with you each day! This is a great home/school connection to what we are learning about in the classroom. So far we have learned how stamps work, how postal workers sort mail, and the ways in which mail is transported. We will be doing Q again this week. We unfortunately did not get a chance to complete our collage this week. If you did not have a chance to send in your Q picture please do so by Thursday of this week. In small groups, we will be working on our handwriting with our Handwriting Without Tears materials. We will be reviewing the letters we have covered so far this year. This will help assess what we need to work on with each child to ensure writing success. We will also be focusing on identifying shapes in the classroom environment. We will be focusing on vocabulary such as perimeter, line, curve and vertex. Have a great week! Mandi Heiser [email protected] February 1, 2016
Parent, We are beginning our unit on mail and the postal service. We will be writing ourselves a letter and mailing it to learn how the mail system functions. Please sit down and write your address on an envelope and add a stamp with your child. Send in that envelope to school by no later than February 8th. If you have any extra stationary, envelopes, stickers, address sticker or cards please send them in. We will be creating a post office in our classroom and the children love to pretend to make mail! We will be reading the books The Post Office by Gail Gibbons, The Jolly Postman by Janet Ahlberg, A Letter to Amy by Ezra Jack Keats and Dear Mr Blueberry by Simon James. We will create a K (know) W (want to learn) L (learn) about the postal system on Monday to help guide our learning throughout this unit. For Valentine’s Day, please do not send in any candy with your child. We have severe allergies and we don’t want anyone to get sick. If you would like to send in Valentine’s cards, please do not write the student’s names on individual cards. This makes it very difficult for students to hand them out. Next week we will decorate our Valentine’s Day bags. Please send in stickers, ribbon or any Valentine ’s Day decorations for this activity! Please just have your child sign each card with their name. We will be handing cards out on February 11th. February 12 we will have a Parent Child Activity from 9:30-10:30. There will be no other class that day. Please plan on attending this with your student. |
