Hello! The students are very excited about our field trip on Thursday! Please be sure to be here by 9am! Please feed your child a good breakfast because we will not be eating on the trip. We will depart the museum at 11:15am, which means we should be back at Ray by 11:30-11:45. Please be sure to let us know if your child gets car sick. Parent volunteers, we will be making a special effort to look at the sea turtles, tortoises and freshwater turtles because it relates to our turtle project. I will provide clipboard for students to make observational drawings on. Next week we will be taking a virtual field trip to the Loggerhead Rescue in FL, http://www.marinelife.org/. Our culminating activity will be when the students present the knowledge they have gained to the other pre-k classrooms and then to our 8th grade buddies. The children have become the experts and outputting (sharing the information out with others) that knowledge demonstrates the highest level of understanding. If you have not heard, we are very sad to announce Ms. Green (the assistant from room 413) passed away on Friday. Notes were sent home to all pre-k families and the pre-k students in 413 discussed the situation with a grief councilor. We will not being discussing it in our class unless another student brings it up. We will not be doing a new letter this week due to the shortened week. Please start saving containers for us to plant seeds in. We will need clean milk cartons/jugs, clean yogurt containers or any small container that can hold a plant. Remember: No school on Friday (April 25) due to the furlough day. Mandi Heiser [email protected] Hi!
For some reason, my last post did not publish. We are still learning about turtles this week. To see what we have learned check out our bulletin board in the hallway. You can see facts that we have learned about sea turtles, tortoises and fresh water turtles. The kids have really gained some incredible knowledge about turtles! This week we wrote a letter to a sea turtle sanctuary. They agreed to do a virtual field trip and show us some of the sea turtles they are rehabilitating at their facility! The kids are very excited! Don’t forget our field trip to the Shedd on March 24. We will depart at 9:00am and return at 11:30. Please be sure to fill out a field trip for and return the money no later than March 18th. The letter of the week is D and the letter for next week (March 14) is letter B. Please in your pictures by Thursday. FYI: The Chicago Board of Education has determined that March 25 will be a furlough day for staff and therefore there will be no student attendance. Please adjust your schedules accordingly. Sorry for the post mix up! Have a great week! Mandi Heiser [email protected] Hello,
We are continuing our unit on turtles. So far we have learned about sea turtles, tortoises as well as fresh water turtles. We have created a chart depicting traits from each of these types of turtles. We have been doing book walks through the books we have read thus far to help us remember facts to add to our chart. We have also viewed videos to observe the different turtles we have studied. This has also provided additional information for our chart! This study has lead us into some interesting discussion on endangered turtles and also turtles that are extinct (Lonesome George). The students were very excited to talk about this and wanted to know how and why turtles become endangered and extinct. This has facilitated some thought-provoking discussions on conservation and taking care of the world around us. We will be taking a field trip to the Shedd on March 24. We will be departing from Ray at 9am and returning around 11:45. We are asking parents to send in $8 and $7 for students. This will cover our entrance and bussing. Please be sure to send in the money no later than March 18th. Be sure to submit your permission slip and money ASAP! While at the museum students will be observing real turtles and we will need adult support to make our unit really come to life! Please consider joining us! This week we will be studying the letter D. Please send your letter D pictures by no later than Thursday. Have a great week! Mandi Heiser [email protected] |
